Artist residency
Swansea Print Workshop
May – August 2010

Whilst Artist in residence at Swansea Print Workshop I will be working on a new series of Glacial Blue screenprints.

Glacial Blue / Colour Observations (work in progress)

Alongside new intricate Glacial Blue colour constructions I’ll be making a special boxed set of prints. The set is inspired by daily colour observations of the Argentière Glacier in March 2010 – twenty seven different glacial blues will be individually mixed and printed.

I am currently making daily colour observations of the Seracs de Lognan, Argentière Glacier. These observations form part of a collection of detailed colour reference material I am building for use in future printed works.

Views of Argentière Glacier from forest walking path [1400m]

After completing a productive and inspiring residency at East London Printmakers I am now back in Argentière. There are a number of new works already in development that build on discoveries made during the two month residency.

Pictured are a selection of Glacial Blue prints and other colour reference material made at ELP, and now installed in my alpine studio.

COLOUR STUDY glacial ice
Pictured are a collection of colour experiments and tests. Using this research material I am developing a series of screenprints that build colour depth through semi-transparent, tints and overlays.

This collection of work forms part of an ongoing enquiry into blue hues observed in glacial ice.

research / field studies
I have been working directly from the landscape to produce a comprehensive range (over 120 to date) of small-scale colour tests and sample swatches. This preparatory work is now being developed into a series of intricate larger scale prints. These prints will be made at East London Printmakers in May/June 2009, see Atelier Jackson for more news of this project.

VISUAL RESEARCH
Spring/Summer 2008: Alpine Valley Glaciers of Chamonix, France
Planned field work:
1. colour studies of glacial ice and mountain landscape
2. visual studies – traces of movement / crevasses

SURFACE STUDY 01: Glacier du Tour 2008

This book object examines the subtleties of the glacial landscape, the play of light on the surface of the glacier and concealed depths. Constructed from crevasse lines observed on the surface of glacier the effect of underlying structures are visually explored.

Glacier du Tour August 2007

I will be giving a talk about the Glacier Project and the field trip to the Glacier du Tour as part of the annual iNOMAD event. Tickets are available via the iNOMAD website: www.inomad.co.uk

GLACIAL VOCABULARY
A unique collection of people (glaciologists, explorers and writers) were asked to list six words they would use to describe a glacier. These lists offer a range of interpretations about glaciers. This element of the project is part of an ongoing enquiry into the written description of natural landscapes.

Dawn Glacier du Tour, August 2007

I won the iNOMAD travel award in June 2007 on the strength of the work created for the RCA summer exhibition. The award funded a field trip to the Glacier du Tour in August 2007, enabling me to develop the project further. I had an amazing time exploring the glacier and will be giving a talk at The Royal Geographical Society in January 2008 about the trip and the work it inspired.

COLOUR STUDY 1: Glacial Blue

An experimental book that uses reflected light to capture the colours observed in glacial ice. The arrangement of the pages and the quality of the light source affect the appearance and intensity of the reflected colours. It is the blue cast on the white surface of the pages that most effectively describes the shifting hues of glacial blue.

SIZE: 200mm x 170mm x 35mm

COMPOSITION:
32 pages: 700g/m² board
screenprinted in 3 tints

VOLUME STUDY 3: Crevasse*

These books examine the relationship between the surface fissure and the internal structure of a void. Externally, the page edges are disrupted by the form of the interior space, shadows denote depth and the reader is impelled to peer into the book.

*Crevasse – a deep, vertical crack in a glacier

ACCUMULATION AND COMPRESSION STUDY: Snowfall

This book presents a tactile reading experience as the object performs under the influence of the reader’s hand. Air trapped between the pages and the increasing density of layers allow the shape of the book to be manipulated.

RCA Summer Graduation Show 2007, Kensington Gardens, London

I graduated in June 2007 from the Royal College of Art (RCA) with an MA in Communication Art and Design. During this period of full-time study I undertook research into the visual description of natural phenomena, culminating in a major study about glaciers. A collection of books and prints from the Glacier Project were exhibited at the RCA Summer Show in Hyde Park in June 2007.

This work is a response to field trips to the French Alps and research into the science of glaciology. The natural structures and properties of glaciers have been used as a method to re-think the structure of a book. The work is not intended to be representational; instead, it is the ‘reader’s’ observation and physical interaction – with every surface of the book – which articulates the content. Intending to expand the ways we communicate content, this project moves away from the conventions of encyclopaedic knowledge; facts are given space to breathe and, in opening up multiple narratives, they become ideas.

Glacier d’Argentiére [Aug 2006 & Feb 2007]

Observations made in the field inspired the books and prints created about glaciers and their features.

Two research trips were made to the French Alps to study glaciers in the summer of 2006 and the winter of 2007.
